SPACE_INVADERS.EXE

Malaz Usta • Nederland • 11’

Exiles are asked questions concerning their life, (plans), and reasons for (their choices). The film tries to communicate the feelings of the displaced when being confronted with such questions which are drawn from the director’s memory. A parody of misinformation and of broken systems, and an exploration of feelings of confusion, loneliness, and uncertainty.

I WANT TO GO HIGHER

Amanda van Hesteren • Nederland • 23’

Four male models make a sincere attempt to get to know themselves better during a retreat in Thailand.

While the most sensitive boy, Arjan, actively talks about the patterns he wants to break and spends a lot of time in bed, the most dominant boy in the group, Jamal, likes to be the center of attention.

Among themselves, the boys behave over the top; riding naked on a scooter, renting exaggerated villas and doing photo shoots for Instagram, while you keep feeling something chafe inside. In private conversations with filmmaker Amanda van Hesteren, we learn more about their individual insecurities as the boys’ vulnerabilities unfold in different ways.

VIA DOLOROSA

Rachel GUTGARTS • Frankrijk • 12’

Between drug addiction, first discoveries of sexuality and a permanent state of war, the filmmaker searches for her lost youth by wandering the streets of Jerusalem.

VITAL!

Nicolas Aubry • Frankrijk • 20’

Oumar, a young teenager, is running away from his native country full of hope. Nonetheless, the nightmare has only just begun. Do you need to be a superhero to get to Europe?

MEMORIES OF A PERFECT DAY

Davina Maria • België/Libanon • 17’

One ephemeral encounter leads to another, connected by the same landscape: the beach at Ostend. Lebanese director Davina Maria, who is more familiar with the Mediterranean, is haunted by an encounter on the shores of the North Sea, which persists in her mind like an obsession. One day in a bookshop, she discovers Ostend, the graphic novel by the author and illustrator Dominique Goblet. The illustrations of the North Sea landscape resonate so much with her own feelings that she decides to meet the author. Their shared fascination for Ostend beach becomes a canvas for artistic and friendly complicity, a space for confidences which reminds us of the importance of listening to one’s own intuitions when seeking the other. The film, a collage of photographs and illustrations, subtly intertwines the women’s respective artistic practices and generates similar feelings of solitude and melancholy, yet also liberation. This two-hander film celebrates friendship, memory and the ephemeral nature of shared experiences, with infinite tenderness.
