BLOK 6: STUURVROUW | (WO)MEN'S STORIES

Bohao Liu • China • 12’

BRIEVEN AAN VINCENT

Hannah van Tassel • Nederland • 25’

Following an emotional crisis, the painter Vincent van Gogh spent a year in a monastery in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence dedicated to the care of the mentally ill. During this year he painted many of his most famous paintings. The monastery is still there and it is still a psychiatric hospital, today receiving exclusively female patients. They are offered a range of artistic therapies, and many of them spend their days like Vincent – painting.
In the year he spent in Saint-Rémy, Vincent wrote many letters to his brother Theo and his sister Wil. In this film, the current patients reply to his letters. They write about their experience of the place, about what they share with Vincent, and about how they find consolation in their paintings and in nature.

THE BIRTH OF NAIKEE

Clémentine Decremps • Duitsland • 20’

By revisiting key elements of Naikee’s journey in her quest for identity and freedom, the film aims to question the overwhelming heteronormative standards of a society too binary to erect an ode to diversity. By re-interpreting Botticelli’s painting “The Birth of Venus”, Naikee asserts her right her right to become an image maker of the society.

THE BUS

Sandra Reina • Spanje • 30’

A bus picks up some passengers on Friday morning to travel the route that brings them closer to the weekend, with their plans, their reflections and their fears. The same bus will pick them up on Sunday afternoon to return them to where they came from.

THREE SISTERS

Iman Behrouzi • Iran • 12’

A meditative symphony on the city and death. The filmmaker returns to places where he, 18 years earlier, had made a film about suicide. Now, in the crowded streets of Tehran and in the city’s rundown corners with flanked walls, he searches for the reasons that had led three sisters to end their lives together.
